Description

This is an original old style circus advertisement
, s
uper large and colorful, reminiscent of the era of big posters
when the circus was the king of local entertainment in America.
This poster is 28 inches by 50 inches, typical size for these large posters before they fell out of favor with modern day merchants and were replaced by smaller sizes because they take up less space in the store fronts. Recent times have brought an end to these traveling shows and the advertising posters along with them.
This poster was displayed in 1974 in advance of the Hoxie Brothers Circus show in Tallahassee, Florida. It was printed by the Enquirer Printing Co, of Cincinnati, Ohio. Enquirer Printing Co
was the oldest and largest printer of circus posters in the country whose work was displayed nationwide
until it was sold in 2014
. As the big tops diminished in number, the company survived by clinging to the small-town Americana tradition. This poster was one using many derivative tiger and lion images used by printers, inspired by the famous and renown animal artist Charles Livingston Bull in 1915. This poster has in addition to the lion and tiger, two delightful clowns and a commanding woman on a rearing horse.
Hoxie Tucker started the Hoxie Bros. Circus, Nov. 17, 1943, and opened the show in Greenville, Florida. Hoxie played mountainous towns in the southern states where other shows would not go. In the late 50s and 60s the Hoxie Circus became known for it's trucks of unusual color. Initially all the show trucks and equipment were painted a lavender color. For the 1976 season the  colors shifted to red, white and blue, making a centennial spectacular with a patriotic themed performance. The Hoxie Bros. Circus was featured in the March 1972 edition of National Geographic magazine.
