Captain George Costentenus was a famous traveling "noble Greek" circus performer in the late 1800s. CGC was tattooed "from head to foot by the Chinese tartars for engaging in rebellion against the king", as one of his early pitch cards claimed. the card went on to say, that he was "completely covered with beautifully delineated figures, of indigo and cinnabar, of beasts, birds, fishes, and hieroglyphics". CGC worked for the legendary PT Barnum's sideshow (and various dime museums), was a huge money maker for Barnum and he was an inspiration for many tattooed performers of the next generation including the famous NYC Bowery, tattooer Charlie Wagner.
