Description
Set of 3 related St Louis Amusement Company photos and RPPC. A real photo postcard of the 1911 St Louis Amusement Company train car Atlanta, with information about the train car and the season. It is unposted and has great detail and tonality. It measures approximately 5 3/8" wide x 3 7/16" tall, with foxing of the corners and mild discoloration of the reverse from aging. On the reverse, written in pen, is the following inscription:"this is the private car with 10 births in it We rented a birth in it,
all winter we sleep in our tents to take care of our stock during
the wk.
taken 4 wks ago.
Then go to the car Saturday night after packing up. and stay
there till mon morning we unload the cars for framing up again"
The two (2) additional photos are snapshots taken of the same group that is standing in front of the train, and a few other people from the circus, while staying in their tents; which was mentioned in the inscription on the reverse of the RPPC. The gentleman, in the one photo, that is not in the RPPC, is owner of the Ferris wheel, one restaurant, and two carnival games used at the St Louis Amusement Co fairs. I have not been able to ascertain his name at this point. If this changes I will amend this listing and if the group has already sold, I will contact the buyer with this information; as it is important to me to preserve the historical records of all items that we sell. These two (2) photos have green photo album paper still attached to the back of them, as well as black paper photo album fasteners tot he front of them. They are in varying condition, with one missing the top left hand corner and has a hard crease to the bottom horizontally across the photograph and a separation to the bottom right hand corner. The other has a small folded nick at the base of the photograph, which only affects the border. They both measure approximately 4" wide x 31/16" tall. These photos came from a Ruskin, FL, carnival and circus family's estate and photograph and memorabilia collection from the 1910's-30's They were involved with the C.R. Leggette Shows, St. Louis Amusement Company, De Kreko Bros, and a few others. They traveled all over the United States and worked with some of the famous sideshow performers and "freaks" of the time. I have been fortunate enough to acquire this amazing collection of photographs and RPPCs and will be listing them a few listings at a time. These listings will include signed photos and RPPCs of many performers and "freaks;" as well as many very rare photographs of performances, booths and games, circus train cars, the devastating 1934 Maine fairgrounds grandstand fire, rides, people and animals involved with these circuses, personal photographs of the families, and more. In this collection was also a number of non-circus related important historical photographs and RPPCs, from their travels. For example they have a photo of Admiral Byrd inspecting his ship to head out on his second expedition to the Antarctic, they have a photo from Chief Osceola's great-granddaughter's wedding, one of the first Goodyear Blimps picking up riders, and more.
